Takoradi: Angry Artisans March For Compensation

Hundreds of artisans who were evicted by city authorities in 2013 for the development of a shopping mall at Tanokrom, Takoradi in the Western region have marched on Tuesday, 27 November 2018 to demand compensation.

The placard-wielding artisans hit the N1 highway just along the Takoradi Shopping Mall which is nearing completion and chanted war songs.

Some of the inscriptions were against the Member of Parliament for Effia, Joseph Cudjoe; former MCE for Sekondi-Takoradi, Captain. Rtd. Richard Anthony Cudjoe; and a Regional Representative of the Council of State, Mrs Alberta Cudjoe.

Some of the placards read: “Hon. Joseph Cudjoe, where is the title documents on the Kansaworado-Mampong Land?”; “Hon. Joseph Cudjoe, "Na yen compensation no wo hen?"; “No Compensation, No Takoradi Mall Opening”; “Any Company that patronises the Takoradi Mall is condoning human rights abuses”; “Takoradi Mall Ltd has orphaned many children by killing their parents”; “How many artisans is Takoradi Mall Ltd going to kill for profits?" among others.

The affected artisans were evicted from their operational zone in February 2014 by the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan Assembly following a court order to get all occupants of the area moved.
A parcel of land at Kansaworodo-Mampong has since been released by the city authorities for redevelopment for the artisans. However, only a few of them have moved to the area.

The irate artisans say they will continue to demonstrate until they get their compensation.
