GRIDCo, ECG Shut Down Key Accra Substations Following Flooding
The Ghana Grid Company and the Electricity Company of Ghana have announced the temporary shutdown of the Mallam and Achimota primary substations following severe flooding caused by heavy rains in parts of the Greater Accra Region.
In a joint press release issued on June 29, 2026, the two power utilities said the precautionary measure was necessary to protect lives, safeguard critical electricity infrastructure, and prevent damage to the national power transmission and distribution network.
According to GRIDCo and ECG, the flooding has affected critical equipment at several substations, creating significant safety risks for both operational personnel and electrical installations.
The utilities explained that the temporary shutdown was undertaken purely as a safety measure while engineers assess the extent of the damage and monitor conditions at the affected facilities.
GRIDCo and ECG said technical teams are continuously evaluating the impact of the flooding on the transmission and distribution network to determine when it will be safe to restore power supply.
They also cautioned that as heavy rains and flooding continue across parts of the Greater Accra Region, electricity supply could be temporarily interrupted in other affected areas if conditions pose a threat to infrastructure or public safety.
The two institutions appealed to customers for patience and understanding, assuring the public that restoration efforts would proceed as soon as it is safe to do so.
