Majority Accuses NPP Of Misusing $600 Million Cocoa Development Funds

The Majority Caucus in Parliament has accused the previous New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration of misappropriating $600 million approved by Parliament for cocoa farm expansion, tree planting, and warehouse construction.

According to the Majority Chif Whip, Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, the funds were intended to support the growth of Ghana’s cocoa sector, increase production capacity, and improve related infrastructure.

However, the Majority claims that despite the approval and allocation of the funds, cocoa production declined significantly, falling from about one million metric tonnes to approximately 450,000 metric tonnes in 2024.

The caucus alleged that the decline raises questions about how the funds were utilised and whether the intended objectives of the investment were achieved.

The Majority said it expects accountability regarding the management of resources allocated to the cocoa sector and stressed the need for improved interventions to restore production levels and support cocoa farmers.
