Minority Accuses First Deputy Speaker Of Intimidating MPs After Parliamentary Walkout

The Minority Caucus in Parliament has expressed concern over what it describes as the intimidating posturing of the First Deputy Speaker, Bernard Ahiafor, particularly towards Minority Members of Parliament seated on the back benches.

The concerns followed a heated debate on the floor of Parliament after the Minority disagreed with a ruling by the First Deputy Speaker.

The disagreement stemmed from a request by the Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo -markin, for the Minister for Communications to brief the House on the projected cost to the state of the government’s proposed nationwide SIM card re-registration exercise.

The Speaker’s ruling on the matter was strongly opposed by the Minority, leading to a tense exchange in the chamber.

The impasse eventually resulted in a walkout by the Minority Caucus in protest.

Addressing journalists after the walkout, the Minority Caucus, led by the Minority Leader, accused the First Deputy Speaker of adopting an approach they believe intimidates members of the caucus.

They called on him to be more tolerant, impartial, and accommodating in the discharge of his duties to ensure fairness and decorum during parliamentary proceedings.
