Gov't Reaffirms State Ownership Of Efua Sutherland Park
The Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, has reaffirmed that Efua Sutherland Park remains state property, citing official records dating back to 1959 to support the government's ownership claim.
Responding to a question on the floor of Parliament from the Member of Parliament for Klottey Korle, Dr. Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings, the minister disclosed that a Certificate of Allocation issued on November 13, 1959, vested the land in the then Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Works and Housing's Horticultural Division.
According to Mr. Buah, the allocation was expressly made for the development of public parks and children's recreational facilities, indicating that the land was reserved for public use rather than private ownership or commercial development.
He stressed that the historical records clearly establish the state's ownership of the park and reinforce its intended purpose as a public recreational space for residents and visitors.
The minister's remarks come amid growing public interest in the ownership and preservation of Afua Sutherland Park, with concerns over encroachment and the future of the historic green space.
Government has in recent months intensified efforts to protect public lands and preserve designated recreational areas from unauthorised occupation and development.
Mr. Buah reiterated the government's commitment to safeguarding public assets and ensuring that lands reserved for community use continue to serve their intended purpose for the benefit of present and future generations.
