Speaker Angry At MPs Misusing Police Escorts And Vehicle Sirens
Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin, has directed Members of Parliament to immediately cease the misuse of police escorts and unauthorised vehicle sirens, urging lawmakers to comply fully with the government's new road safety measures.
Addressing Parliament, Mr. Bagbin said legislators must lead by example by adhering to the directive, which seeks to improve road safety, promote respect for the law and restore public confidence in the use of emergency privileges on Ghana's roads.
The Speaker expressed concern over the increasing practice of fitting unauthorised sirens to vehicles and using police escorts without the necessary approval, warning that such actions undermine the work of emergency and security services that rely on priority access during critical situations.
He noted that the abuse of police escorts and sirens diminishes public respect for the law and creates unnecessary challenges for agencies responding to genuine emergencies.
The directive follows a Cabinet decision banning the installation and use of sirens on both private and public vehicles without official authorisation.
As part of the enforcement measures, the Ghana Police Service has been mandated to remove unauthorised sirens from vehicles and clamp down on the illegal use of police escort services nationwide.
Mr. Bagbin called on all Members of Parliament to demonstrate leadership by fully complying with the directive, stressing that adherence to the rules by public officials is essential to promoting discipline and ensuring fairness on the country's roads.
