Teshie Mantse Unveils Plans For Enhanced 2026 Homowo Festival
The Teshie Mantse, Chief Gbetsoolo Nii Ashitey Akomfra III, has announced plans to elevate this year's Teshie Homowo festival with stronger government support, improved security arrangements and greater national recognition.
In a message to the media, the Teshie Mantse reflected on the 2025 festival, expressing regret over the incidents that resulted in the loss of lives and property despite prior commitments by the military, police, clergy, the area's Member of Parliament and other stakeholders to ensure a peaceful celebration.
He attributed the security lapses to the involvement of newly deployed officials who lacked adequate knowledge of the local security environment.
"However, all is not lost and I wish to reassure all Teshimei and every Homowo fan that we are taking Homowo to a new level this year," he said.
The traditional ruler noted that, for the first time in Ghana's history, Parliament has officially acknowledged the cultural and economic significance of the Teshie Homowo Festival.
He also disclosed that the Minister for Tourism, Creative Arts and Culture, Abla Dzifa Gomashie, has pledged to work with the Teshie Traditional Council, the Ledzokuku Municipal Assembly and other community stakeholders to enhance the organisation and visibility of the festival.
According to the Teshie Mantse, government has put in place adequate security measures to ensure the safety of residents and visitors throughout the 2026 celebrations.
He announced the schedule for this year's festival activities as follows:
- Gbemilaa Ceremony – Monday, August 10, 2026
- Sprinkling of Kpokpoi – Tuesday, August 25, 2026
- Annual Football Harvest – Saturday, August 29, 2026
- Kpaishimo Flags and Group Procession – Sunday, August 30, 2026
- Tsesebumo Street Carnival – Saturday, September 5, 2026
The Teshie Mantse also expressed appreciation to the Church of Pentecost for renovating the Teshie Traditional Council Hall, commending Apostle Wilberforce Nkrumah Agyeman, Dr. Dela Quampah, Pastor E.K. Appiah, Pastor Martin Owusu, Pastor Francis Achia and Elder Benjamin Akporh Mensah for their contributions.
He further reminded the public that August 7, 2026 marks the 200th anniversary of the historic Katamanso War and paid tribute to two Teshie warriors, Antreh and Afutu Dzani, whose bravery contributed to the victory of the allied GaDangme forces over the Asante army at Dodowa.
The Teshie Mantse called on residents to honour the legacy of the heroes by embracing peace and unity to ensure a successful and incident-free Homowo Festival.
"I wish to make a passionate appeal to all Teshimei to honour the memories of these heroes by smoking the peace pipe so that, together, we can celebrate a very peaceful Homowo 2026," he said.
