Dawn Blackout:Power Restored To Parts Of The Country-GRIDCo Reveals

Ghana’s national power system experienced a major fault on the Akosombo–Volta transmission line in the early hours of Thursday, August 20, 2026, resulting in power outages in parts of the country.

The incident occurred at approximately 4:30 a.m., triggering the automatic shutdown of the Akosombo generating units as well as some thermal power plants.

The automatic tripping was activated by the power system’s protection mechanisms to safeguard the stability and integrity of the National Interconnected Transmission System.

The Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) said its engineers, working with other power sector agencies, immediately began efforts to isolate the affected transmission line and safely restore the national power system.

According to GRIDCo, power supply has already been restored to some affected areas, while restoration work continues to reconnect the remaining affected customers.

The company said its technical teams have been fully mobilised and are working to restore power to all affected areas as quickly and safely as possible.

GRIDCo has assured the public that further updates will be provided as restoration efforts progress and appealed to customers for patience and understanding during the process.
