Sarkodie Urges Artists To Reject Toxic Fan Behaviour
Ghanaian rapper Sarkodie has advised fellow artists to be cautious about fans who attack or demean other artistes and brands in an attempt to promote them.
The award-winning rapper said artists should not mistake such behaviour for genuine loyalty, warning that some individuals engage in online confrontations primarily to generate attention and personal engagement.
In a message to artists, Sarkodie said, “Just because a fan shits on another brand to elevate you doesn’t mean they love you more.
Be careful about entertaining that energy.”
He noted that the current social media environment had created a culture in which some people sought engagement for their own benefit while appearing to defend the artists they support.
“Some people love engagement for their own personal gain.
They may look like they’re fighting for you, but they genuinely don’t give a fuck about you,” he said.

Sarkodie, however, acknowledged that some fans genuinely become emotional or defensive when their favourite artists are criticised, sometimes going overboard.
He said such passion was understandable but urged fans and artists alike to exercise restraint.
“Passion and loyalty don’t need toxicity to be effective,” he stated.
The rapper also called on members of the new generation of his fanbase, SarkNation, to draw inspiration from the older generation, saying the group previously avoided toxic behaviour and remained focused on music, the movement and the Sarkodie brand.
“I think the new SarkNation crop should look back at the old crop and bring back some of those traits.
We never entertained toxic energy,” he said.
According to Sarkodie, maintaining that approach was one of the qualities that made SarkNation special and helped sustain the relationship between him and his supporters.
He further expressed appreciation to his fans, attributing his continued presence in the music industry to God, SarkNation and hard work.
“I know I’m still here because of God, SarkNation and hard work, so I never joke with you guys. I appreciate you all more than you know,” he added.
