The Minister for Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Samuel Okudzeto-Ablakwa, has held discussions with Guyanese diplomat and former Foreign Minister, Carolyn Allison Rodrigues-Birkett, who is seeking to become the next Secretary-General of the United Nations.

The meeting provided an opportunity for the Minister to hear Ms Rodrigues-Birkett’s vision and priorities for the UN should she succeed in her bid for the organisation’s top position.

The discussions also focused on reforms within the United Nations and measures to make the world’s foremost multilateral organisation more responsive to the changing needs and expectations of member states.

Mr Ablakwa said particular attention was given to ensuring that the UN becomes more “fit for purpose” and better addresses the legitimate concerns of countries in the Global South.

He described the engagement as a useful opportunity to exchange ideas on the future direction of the UN and the need for reforms that would strengthen multilateral cooperation.

Mr Ablakwa expressed Ghana’s best wishes to Ms Rodrigues-Birkett, describing her as a distinguished Guyanese diplomat and former Foreign Minister, as she purs.
