BoG To Introduce New Ghana Cedi Notes In November
The Bank of Ghana (BoG) is set to introduce a new series of Ghana Cedi banknotes, dubbed the Heritage Series, as part of efforts to modernise the country’s currency and enhance its security and durability.
The Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr Johnson Pandit Asiama, announced the development during the 132nd Regular Meeting of the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) at the Bank’s headquarters in Accra.
Dr Asiama said the new banknotes were being introduced in response to evolving currency circulation patterns, technological advancements and increasingly sophisticated security standards.
According to him, the Heritage Series will feature enhanced security measures, improved durability and modern designs reflecting Ghana’s heritage, culture, identity and national aspirations.
“The Ghana Cedi is more than a medium of exchange. It is a symbol of our economic sovereignty and an important instrument of economic activity,” Dr Asiama said.
He explained that the new notes would offer stronger protection against counterfeiting, withstand prolonged circulation and help the Bank of Ghana manage the currency more efficiently and cost-effectively.
The new series will also honour selected Ghanaian national heroes and incorporate iconographic elements intended to tell the story of the country’s past while reflecting its aspirations for the future.
Dr Asiama stressed that the introduction of the Heritage Series would not invalidate the existing Ghana Cedi banknotes.
He said the current notes would continue to circulate alongside the new series, and urged the public not to rush to exchange or withdraw existing currency merely because the new banknotes were being introduced.
The Governor also appealed to individuals, businesses, traders and financial institutions to handle banknotes responsibly to preserve their quality and reduce the cost of replacing damaged currency.
He specifically urged the public to avoid crumpling, writing on or stapling banknotes, as well as using them for decorative purposes such as money bouquets and spraying.
Dr Asiama described the preservation of clean and durable banknotes as a shared national responsibility, noting that proper handling would contribute to more efficient currency management.
The Ghana Cedi Heritage Series is scheduled to be officially launched on November 3, 2026, at the Bank Square in Accra.
Dr Asiama urged Ghanaians to embrace the new currency series with pride and confidence while taking collective responsibility for preserving the integrity of the national currency.
