TOR Receives 950,000 Barrels Of Sankofa Crude From GNPC For Refining
The Tema Oil Refinery (TOR), in partnership with the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC), has received 950,000 barrels of Light Sweet Crude Oil from Ghana’s Sankofa-Gye Nyame Field for processing into petroleum products.
The shipment, supplied through the GNPC and transported via Sonangol Cazenga, marks the first time a Ghanaian refinery is receiving a parcel of crude oil from the Sankofa Field for refining.
The crude was produced from the Offshore Cape Three Points (OCTP) area at Sanzule in the Western Region and will be processed by TOR into fuel products for the Ghanaian market.
The development is being described as a significant milestone in efforts to strengthen domestic refining capacity, improve energy security and retain more value from Ghana’s petroleum resources within the local economy.
According to the Managing Director of TOR, Edmund Kombat the receipt of the crude demonstrates the potential for stronger collaboration between Ghana’s upstream, midstream and downstream petroleum sectors.
The Managing Director of TOR said the partnership with GNPC would help improve crude supply to the refinery, support sustained operations and create greater value from Ghana’s indigenous petroleum resources.
He said the delivery represented an important opportunity for TOR to strengthen its operations while contributing to Ghana’s broader objective of building a resilient and sustainable petroleum industry.
He added that the development also aligns with the government’s stated objective of linking Ghana’s upstream petroleum production with domestic refining and downstream activities to ensure that more value from the country’s natural resources are retained in Ghana.
TOR said the collaboration between the two state-owned institutions reinforces the strategic importance of Ghana’s locally produced crude oil to the country’s energy sector.
The refinery added that GNPC and TOR are engaging on other areas of cooperation aimed at deepening their partnership and advancing the mutual interests of the two institutions and the Ghanaian public.
The TOR Managing Director expressed appreciation to President John Dramani Mahama for his leadership, Energy Minister Dr John Abdulai Jinapor, and the Chief Executive Officer and management of GNPC for their support and partnership.
He also thanked TOR’s tolling partners, Fujeirah and Triangle Commodities Trading (TCT), for their continued support and commitment to the refinery.
