Broken-down Tanker Causes Severe Traffic On Achimota-Ofankor Stretch
Drivers and commuters using the Achimota-Ofankor stretch of the Accra-Nsawam highway on Friday during the peak of the evening endured hours of delays after a tanker broke down around the Achimota Mall area.
The tanker reportedly came to a stop across part of the highway, obstructing traffic heading towards Pokuase and causing a major gridlock on the busy stretch.
The situation left motorists stranded for several hours as vehicles struggled to navigate the affected section of the road.
What worsened the situation was the decision to repair the broken-down tanker on the highway instead of towing it away to create space for traffic to flow.
The tanker, which had partly occupied the roadway, significantly reduced the available space for vehicles and contributed to the build-up of traffic in both directions from Achimota- Neoplan.
Commuters and drivers caught in the congestion complained of extended travel times, with some spending hours on a journey that would ordinarily take considerably less time.
The incident also disrupted the movement of commercial vehicles and private motorists who use the Accra-Nsawam highway as a major route into the Ga West municipality.
The heavy congestion stretched across the Achimota-Ofankor corridor, creating considerable inconvenience for commuters and motorists.
The incident has renewed concerns about the need for prompt towing of broken-down heavy-duty vehicles from busy highways, particularly during peak traffic periods, to prevent avoidable congestion.
