Sam George Inspects Rural Telephony Projects In Sekyere Afram Plains

The Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, Samuel Nartey George, has inspected rural telephony infrastructure in the Sekyere Afram Plains District of the Ashanti Region to assess progress and verify the implementation of projects aimed at expanding telecommunications access.

The inspection, conducted on October 13, 2026, formed part of the second and final day of the Minister’s monitoring tour of the Ashanti Region, with the Ghana Investment Fund for Electronic Communications (GIFEC) participating in the exercise.

The delegation, which included the Administrator of GIFEC, Sofo Tanko Rashid-Computer, visited Nyameanema No. 1, Nyameanema No. 2, Dawia and Abenua to assess completed and ongoing works under the Rural Telephony Project.

The exercise was intended to independently verify project implementation, establish the status of infrastructure delivered on the ground and identify outstanding works requiring attention.

The field inspection also forms part of efforts to strengthen accountability and ensure that investments in rural telecommunications infrastructure translate into improved connectivity for underserved communities.

During the tour, Mr George and his delegation paid courtesy calls on chiefs in the beneficiary communities and engaged with the District Chief Executive to discuss local connectivity needs and development priorities.

The engagements highlighted the importance of reliable telecommunications services in supporting economic activities and improving access to essential services in rural areas.

Improved connectivity is expected to help residents access digital services, support educational activities, facilitate business operations and enhance communication within and beyond their communities.

GIFEC said the exercise reinforced the importance of direct field monitoring and quality assurance in ensuring the effective delivery of digital infrastructure.

Through the Rural Telephony Project and other universal access initiatives, the Fund seeks to extend telecommunications services to communities that remain underserved because of geographical challenges and limited commercial incentives for network operators.
