Ronaldo Retires From Portugal After 146 Goals And 234 International Appearances

Portuguese football icon Cristiano Ronaldo has announced his retirement from international football, bringing an end to a remarkable 23-year career with the national team during which he scored 146 goals in 234 appearances.

The 41-year-old confirmed his decision on Thursday, November 5, 2026, in a video message shared on social media, saying he was ready to hand over Portugal’s famous number seven shirt to the next generation.

Ronaldo described the decision as an emotional one, reflecting on the privilege of representing his country for more than two decades.

“Today, the time has come to pass it on to the future. It was not an easy decision, because some decisions are not made with the mind alone, they are also made with the heart,” he said.

The former Real Madrid and Manchester United forward made his senior international debut in August 2003 against Kazakhstan. Over the years, he established himself as Portugal’s most influential player, becoming the highest goalscorer and most-capped footballer in men’s international history.

His international career also brought significant success at major tournaments. Ronaldo captained Portugal to their first European Championship title at Euro 2016 before helping the country win the UEFA Nations League in 2019 and 2025.

He also featured at six FIFA World Cups, becoming the first player to score at six editions of the tournament. His final World Cup appearance came at the 2026 competition, where Portugal were eliminated in the round of 16 by eventual champions Spain.

Ronaldo’s retirement follows a difficult period with the national team, including a disagreement with head coach Jorge Jesus over his playing time. The forward reportedly left Portugal’s training camp in September after being left out of the starting lineup.

His final appearance for Portugal came on September 24, when he featured in a 1-0 victory over Wales in the Nations League.

Despite ending his international career, Ronaldo is expected to continue playing at club level with Saudi Arabian side Al-Nassr.

The Portuguese Football Federation has expressed its gratitude to the forward for his contributions, describing him as an inspirational leader who helped raise the country’s profile in world football. It also announced plans to organise a special tribute in recognition of his achievements.

Ronaldo leaves behind an international legacy built on goals, records and major trophies, with his 146 goals and 234 appearances setting benchmarks for future generations of Portuguese footballers.
