I Detest Men Who Cannot Stand Women Leading Them-GTA CEO

The Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA), Maame Efua Houadjeto, has highlighted her more than 25 years of experience in tourism, hospitality and corporate event management, while expressing concern about what she describes as resistance to women leading organisations.

In a statement reflecting on her professional journey, Ms Houadjeto said she had spent over two decades managing corporate events, exhibitions, marketing activities, investment forums and business-to-business engagements.

She also disclosed that she had published magazines covering the property and construction sectors and participated in organising major entertainment events, including the visit of American musician Akon to Ghana for the first time.

Although she studied journalism and later pursued project management, as well as a master's degree in governance and leadership, Ms Houadjeto said her career eventually took her into the hospitality industry, where she developed a strong interest in tourism and event management.

She recounted her experience in tourism, particularly managing high-profile visitors such as Louis Farrakhan and Akbar Muhammad, who brought large groups to Ghana.

According to her, her company also worked with several African-American associations visiting Ghana for the first time and became the first to host a Princess Cruises ship in the country.

Ms Houadjeto maintained that her involvement in the hospitality industry over the years had contributed to efforts to promote its growth and professionalism.

She also recalled her time at Charterhouse, where she handled client services, supported the organisation of the maiden Ghana Music Awards and managed local and international accounts.

Despite her professional experience, the GTA Chief Executive expressed disappointment over what she sees as continuing opposition to women occupying leadership positions.

“It’s disheartening to see that after all these years, some men still can’t stand having a woman lead an organization,” she said.
